5 steps to winterproof your skin

5 steps to winterproof your skin

Maintain your summer glow while protecting your skin from winter weather.

As autumn approaches, it’s time to make some changes to your skincare routine. You want to maintain the healthy glow you’ve had all summer, while protecting your skin from the potential damage caused by winter weather.

The following advice and professional tips will ensure your skin looks its best through the darkest months.

1. Unclog your pores
The amazing truth is that we have more than 300,000 pores on our face, which can double in size by the time you reach 50. Also, during summer, when we tend to be hotter and sweatier, our sebum levels rocket, making our pore sizes stretch, too! To help shrink them back to their pre-summer size use a gentle exfoliating scrub at least once a week to clear away any dead skin cells and dirt from over-stretched pores. Your daily dose of sunscreen during summer would have clogged your pores, too, so switch your sunscreen for a more lightweight moisturiser with added SPF.

Professional tip: For a quick fix, sweep an ice cube gently over your pores for 15 seconds before you moisturise. This will help to shrink pore size and tighten the skin.

2. Keep protecting skin from the sun
It’s still very important to protect skin from harmful UV rays in winter, as overcast sun can be just as dangerous as bright sunlight. Regardless of the time of the day or the season, UVA rays (the ageing ones that are responsible for wrinkles and brown spots) are always present and will even penetrate cloud cover. Protect ageing skin from potential damage by using a lightweight daily moisturiser with added SPF, such as Olay Regenerist SPF30.

Professional tip: Apart from your face, your hands are the one part of your body that’s always exposed to harmful sun rays, so while you’re applying your protective moisturiser to your face, apply any excess to the top of your hands, too.

3. Rehydrate your moisture levels
You may have noticed that the older you get, the drier your skin becomes. And after months of being exposed to summer’s dry heat - and to dehydrating indoor air-conditioned environments - your complexion will have dried out even further. To keep your skin in the best condition possible, it’s important to lock in the moisture with nourishing skincare creams and serums, not only during the day under your make-up, but also at night, so you wake in the morning with softer, smoother skin.

Professional tip: Hot water will strip your skin of its natural oils, so use lukewarm water when cleansing. Or skip the water step completely and clean skin with a wipe-off cleanser.

4. Find the time to treat sagging skin
As the days get shorter and the evenings get longer, you might find you have more time at home to give extra attention to the parts of your skin that end to be forgotten. Like the changes that happen below your chin! You may have noticed more lines on your neck, a crepey jaw-line or a slight sagging of your chin? Make use of this hibernation time by massaging your moisturiser into your jawline, neck and chest – Olay Total Effects works on all parts of the body.

Professional tip: If you’re extra paranoid about a wrinkly neck, draw the attention away from it with illuminating creams and radiance-boosting make-up that will help the rest of your complexion glow.

5. Treat hyperpigmentation and age spots
Brown spots and patchy skin, also known as hyperpigmentation, can make you look older than you actually are, and as sun damage is the primary cause, your summer holiday may have actually made the condition worse. Use exfoliating cleansers to gently buff away the dead top layer of your skin and moisturise with products containing antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, to help prevent further damage.

Professional tip: Try using a BB or CC cream with an SPF as your make-up base to help even out your skin tone going into autumn.
