6 eco-friendly ways to soothe winter skin

Don’t let winter weather get you down. Here’s how to keep your skin looking its best, without harming the planet…

Colder temperatures and harsh winds outside mean you turn up the central heating inside to warm yourself up.

The bad news is, this is the exact combination that can cause skin sensitivities – itchiness, dryness, redness and more. Plus upping your heating is not great for the planet, so it’s nice to be able to make up for it in other areas.

So we’ve rounded up a number of ways you can take care of sensitive skin in an environmentally friendly way, so you can have a clear conscience, as well as clear skin!

1. Use natural oils

Dry, sensitive skin needs moisture, but you can skip the prepared creams and lotions and use natural oils instead. Rather than reaching for a tube of hand cream after you’ve done the washing-up, raid the kitchen cupboards and rub in some coconut oil or olive oil instead. Both are absorbed quickly and will nourish the skin.

2. Create homemade exfoliants

Exfoliating those dry, dead skin cells that create flakiness reveals healthier skin underneath, and it’s really easy to make a body scrub at home rather than buying something in a plastic pot. Simply combine coconut oil with sugar or salt and add a few drops of essential oil or citrus zest to make it smell lovely.

3. Avoid hot water

Now this is a tough one to stick to! The last thing you want to do after getting out of the lovely warm cocoon of your bed on a cold morning is to stand under a lukewarm shower, but your skin will thank you for it. Hot water dries it out. Plus cooler showers use less energy, so it’s a planet win too.

4. Make like Cleopatra

While it would be wasteful to sit in a whole bath of semi-skimmed, adding a couple of cups of milk to a tepid bath will heal dry skin and help hydrate it. A washcloth dipped in milk is great for soothing itchy skin too.

5. Hydrate from within

There is a difference between dehydrated skin and dry skin. Avoid the former by drinking plenty of water (aim for two litres per day) and eating foods with a high water content, such as cucumber, tomatoes, oranges and melons.

6. Keep your clothes soft against skin

How you dress can affect your skin. Some people find wool too itchy to wear, and others avoid synthetic fabrics because they don’t feel as good on the skin as natural ones, such as cotton and cashmere.

Whatever materials suit your skin, use a detergent that smooths clothing fibres so they don’t irritate sensitive skin by scratching it. Washing with Fairy Non-Bio, for example, gives you huggably soft clothes, plus it’s dermatologically tested, while our fabric conditioner is hypoallergenic. In fact, Fairy Non Bio products all have the seal of approval from the Skin Health Alliance – so you can trust it’s perfect for sensitive skin.

Even better, Fairy Non Bio Gel Cold Wash is specially formulated to give you the same great cleaning power and super-soft clothes but at lower temperatures, so it’s more eco-friendly.

According to the Energy Savings Trust, if you turn the dial on your washing machine down to 30°, you will use 57% less energy than a cycle at 40°C*. This helps save your pennies too. Now that’s a soothing thought.
