A few simple shifts to your beauty regime and lifestyle can be all it takes to get a head-turning glow

A few simple shifts to your beauty regime and lifestyle can be all it takes to get a head-turning glow

Ask any woman what’s on her beauty wish list and she’ll almost certainly mention a more radiant complexion – indeed, 50% of women voted youthful skin the secret to looking good in a survey for Olay (The 2010 Big British Beauty Poll).

This doesn’t have to mean a face that’s completely line free, but rather skin that glows with vitality and health. And you can achieve that by including the following beauty tips in your skincare routine.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

Beauty experts say that in your 50s and beyond, moisturising is the single most important thing you can do for your skin, especially in winter when heated buildings can leave it heavily dehydrated. Hormonal changes in your 50s can also mean many women find their skin loses some of its suppleness and is more prone to dryness, making it look duller.

Peptide-based moisturisers help stimulate collagen production and plump skin – try Olay Regenerist Daily 3 Point Treatment Cream for this skin-boosting amino acid. Apply your moisturiser straight after washing – research suggests moisturising within minutes of patting your skin dry helps trap moisture before it evaporates off the skin.

Protect, protect, protect

Wear a product containing a high SPF all year round – yes, even in winter – to help protect against further sun damage. Make it easy on yourself with a product that combines sun protection and an anti-ageing formula, plus a touch of foundation – Olay’s Regenerist CC Complexion Corrector is a great example.

Try a facial massage

Many beauty editors and facialists swear by a DIY facial massage for a more youthful-looking complexion. Do it at home by massaging moisturiser or serum into your forehead in small circles with your first three fingers, then use your index and middle fingers to work the product in along your cheekbones. Finish by using your middle finger to massage the area in-between your eyebrows to help melt away frown lines.

Use an eye cream

The delicate skin around your eyes is one of the first areas to give way to age. It’s important, then, to keep the skin supple but without damaging it. Try applying a small amount of Olay Regenerist Luminous Eye Swirl to your eye area by dabbing it on with your ring finger. Specially formulated for your delicate eye area, it helps brighten, reducing the appearance of dark circles, and over time you’ll notice a firmer, youthful look.

Deep clean your face

Cleansing is vital – especially before bed – to remove make-up as well as dirt and grease accumulated over the day. If you don’t, any night creams you apply won’t be able to penetrate properly and can also leave your skin more prone to blocked pores, blackheads and pimples. Olay Regenerist 3 Point Super Cleansing System uses a battery-powered brush to gently exfoliate and cleanse, removing make-up four times more effectively than manual cleansing, resulting in up to 30% better absorption of anti-ageing products.

Feed skin from within

Drink more water – aim for around six to eight glasses a day. Studies suggest that drinking half a litre of water increases blood flow to the skin, and lots of people say their skin looks plumper and clearer when they’re well hydrated.

Another tip for glowing skin is to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Researchers at the University of Nottingham found those who ate more portions of fresh, colourful produce had a more golden skin tone. They put it down to substances called carotenoids – including beta-carotene and lycopene – which give fruit and veg such as carrots, swedes, mangoes and oranges their bright colours.

Exercise for glowing skin

One good reason to get your body moving (apart from all the health benefits, such as cardiovascular fitness, strength and boosted immune systems, of course) is that exercise helps give you radiant skin. This is because it increases circulation, which helps carry nutrients and oxygen to the skin and remove waste from cells. Regular workouts also stimulate the production of skin’s natural oils, helping to keep your complexion smooth and supple.

And it’s never too late to reap the benefits (provided your doctor says it’s safe). One study suggests regular exercise can actually reverse skin ageing in those who start later in life. Scientists at McMaster University, Canada, followed a group of over-65s who started jogging or cycling for 30 minutes twice a week at a moderately strenuous pace. After three months, researchers examined skin samples (taken from an area of the body not frequently exposed to the sun) and discovered the outer and inner layers appeared very similar to those from a 20-40 age group.

Improve your skin while you sleep

Your skin naturally repairs itself while you sleep, so use a night cream specifically formulated for your age. Night creams often contain more concentrated levels of ingredients than day creams, so can deliver more effective results. Plus, the six to eight hours most people spend asleep is a great opportunity for the skin to benefit from all the rehydrating and plumping effects of a rich moisturiser.

And never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Skin makes new collagen (the substance that stops it from sagging) while you’re slumbering, and sleep deprivation results in less blood flow to the skin around your face. Thus a good dose of ‘zzz’s will mean you wake with a natural, healthy glow.
