The A/W 16 trends you already own

How to be at the forefront of fashion this autumn without spending a penny

Every season brings a whole host of new fashion trends, but not many of us can afford to buy a whole new wardrobe.

Besides, by now most of us have figured out our innate style and what suits us, rather than worrying about keeping up with the Joneses (or these days, the Kardashians).

But it is possible to stay true to your own taste and incorporate the season’s trends. So here are the key items you already own that you can recycle and update for the A/W 16 season…

1. The rain mac

Perfect for those mild but drizzly days, a rain mac is a seasonal essential that never goes out of fashion. If you don’t already own one, you should.

Update it: A/W 16 is all about feminine silhouettes and ruffles, so make sure you synch in the waist by tying the mac’s belt and scrunch the sleeves up to your elbows for casual elegance.

2. The scarf

Chances are you have a blanket scarf or pashmina stored away in your cupboard somewhere, as they are often saviours for chilly arms on summer evenings, then in autumn you can wrap it around your neck as a chic scarf.

If you have a selection to choose from, the colour of the season is violet, while patterns are all about barcode stripes and checks.

Update it: Cape coats are in again this year, but for a budget version, you can use your blanket scarf. Fold it in half so you are left with a triangle and drape it across your shoulders. Bring each end over and down in front of you, overlap them slightly and secure with a waist belt.

3. The boots

Believe it or not, your chunky-soled, lace-up hiking boots are the height of fashion this autumn. Now that’s a trend we can get comfortable with.

Update it: First of all, clean off any crusty mud, then team your hiking boots with chunky socks and skinny jeans or patterned tights with a feminine, floaty dress.

4. The hat

There’s no point in carefully cleaning, conditioning and styling your hair if you’re going to step out into the wind, rain and cold without any protection, as it will undo all your good work. Instead, shelter your hair from the elements with a stylish hat.

Update it: This season is all about the fedora, so dust yours off – or knick your husband’s – and wear it with long, loose wavy hair.

5. The party outfit

Velvet is back, so dig out that old faithful velvet number and give it a new lease of life.

Also, sequins are making a return – in particular dresses embroidered with them from top to bottom – which is perfect for the festive season.

Update it: Sumptuous velvet or sparkling sequins make enough of a statement on their own, so wear them with few or simple accessories.

Keep make-up simple too, but pair velvet with a dark lipstick – berry, for example – and sequins are perfect with a smokey eye.

6. The day dress

The knitted jumper dress is a seasonal staple, and one that returns time and time again. The only downside it can get itchy, so make sure the wool feels soft against sensitive skin with Fairy Non-Bio Pods.

Update it: Push the sleeves up and wear it with over-the-knee boots and a Fedora hat.
