From caring for our children and grandchildren, we know that sensitive skin needs special care. But we forget that age, too, can affect our skin sensitivity, so even if you’ve never suffered from sensitive skin before, it doesn’t mean you never will.

If you are starting to notice dry, red and/or itchy patches of skin, see if any of the below potential causes could be the reason – and, if so, you could find that a simple switch in your lifestyle makes all the difference to your skin.

Your skincare

As we age, our skin becomes drier, which can cause it to become more sensitive to the elements. So if you pair the drying effects of ageing and the harsh winter weather, your skin may become red and flaky in patches.

To help, apply a rich, thick, fragrance-free moisturiser and body lotion post-shower, when you’re still in your steamy bathroom. This will trap as much moisture in the skin as possible, which will help eliminate flakiness and strengthen your skin’s protective moisture barrier against the elements.

Your clothes

One hundred per cent cotton is your friend, so when it comes to your towels, bedding and underwear, this is the best choice for you.

The heavy dyes used in denim and synthetic fibres such as polyester, nylon and spandex can irritate, so watch out for this. Also, avoid wool at all costs. As appealing as it is in winter, chances are this itchy fabric will irritate your skin.

To keep your clothes, towels and bedding free from other allergens, such as pollens and dust, be sure to wash them regularly. Always wash with a non-bio detergent, as this doesn’t contain enzymes and is dermatologically tested to protect delicate skin.

Your diet

Allergic reactions come in many forms, so if you get a red rash after eating a particular food, you should probably try to cut it out of your diet. Gluten, whey, casein, food colouring and preservatives are common culprits for skin irritations, for example. Eating too much sugar can also cause redness and irritation of the skin due to sugar’s inflammatory properties.

To keep skin healthy, hydrated and glowing, drink plenty of water and eat lots of dark green and orange fruits and vegetables, which are full of antioxidants and help to boost collagen.

Your stress levels

Stress causes a rise in cortisol, a hormone that can cause breakouts as well as damage collagen, increasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
