Top tips for a better dental check-up

Still dread going to the dentist after all these years? Read on for ways to make sure you always leave them smiling.

Sixty-seven per cent of British adults are apprehensive about visiting their dentist, according to a survey conducted by Oral-B and the Oral Health Foundation. And for some, that apprehension is caused by the worry that our dentist will ‘tell us off’ for how we’ve been taking care of our teeth.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are four simple steps you can take at home in order to improve your next dental check-up and feel better about your oral health.

1. Think before you eat

It’s been hammered into us since we were kids, but it’s important not to forget that we should avoid foods that are high in sugar and acid, as they can weaken enamel and cause tooth decay.

Both issues are common in the UK, affecting 50% and 30% of the population respectively, and can lead to more serious oral health issues, such as extreme sensitivity, gum disease and cavities.

You – and your dentist – will really notice the difference if you cut down on fizzy drinks, fruit juices, sweets and other sugary or acidic treats.

2. Use the toothpaste that dentists use

Oral-B Pro-Expert is the #1 toothpaste most used by UK dentists*. It contains a unique combination of ingredients that target and protect against the key areas dentists check most: cavities, plaque, gum problems, sensitivity, stains, bad breath, tartar and enamel erosion.

Oral-B Pro-Expert is also a great toothpaste to use regularly between check-ups because it contains Stannous Fluoride. It is able to adapt to your mouth’s specific requirements, identifying your issue and adapting to tackle it. So if you have the makings of enamel erosion, sensitivity or gum problems, it will stop it from developing, meaning your next trip to the dentist will be a lot less painful – literally!

3. Upgrade your brush

It’s obvious to dental professionals if you have not been brushing properly, primarily due to the build-up of plaque.

The best way to get ahead is to make sure you brush the way your dental professional recommends: twice a day for two minutes each time, using a good toothpaste (see above) and an electric toothbrush. Try the Oral-B GENIUS 9000, which helps to make sure you’re brushing properly and don’t miss a single spot.

4. Don’t just prepare your mouth – prepare yourself

It’s a good idea to make a list of questions to ask your dentist to make sure you get the most out of your check-up. We’ve listed a few suggestions to get you started:

  • What are the essential basics I need to know around daily dental care?

  • Is there anything else I can do to improve my overall dental health?

  • Are there any specific foods or drinks I should avoid to protect my teeth?

  • Should I tell you about any other health issues or concerns I have at the moment, in case they affect my oral health?

By taking better care of your teeth with these tips, you’ll no longer dread the dentist, and will have a better and brighter smile to boot!
