Summer laundry: how to achieve the perfect wash

It’s the top time to blitz through those laundry piles – here’s how to make the best of it

Summer brings so many joys – trips to the coast, Wimbledon, ice cream, the smell of cut grass – and then of course there’s the chance to fly through the laundry, as you can peg everything outside and it dries in what feels like a matter of minutes.

But while you no doubt have a laundry routine that you stick to – a favourite detergent, a particular cycle and a set temperature – it’s worth rethinking this, as you may not be doing what’s best for your clothes and linens.

Here are the things to consider on your next laundry day.

Do you Pod?

Because they’re still a new kid in the laundry aisle, you may not have tried liquid laundry capsules yet, but it could be time to think about switching.

Pods are easy, mess-free and convenient to use. They don’t contain oxygen bleach and so are great for washing coloured loads, plus they work well on greasy stains – oils and make-up for example. They also deliver the perfect amount of detergent, so you don’t have to measure anything out, and don’t risk using too much or too little.

Ariel 3in1 Pods, for example, combine the cleaning power of three types of liquid detergent, tackling a wide range of stains, for a cleaner, brighter wash in one go. So all if you have to do it is throw it in the drum, load it up with laundry and press ‘start’. Simple.

Have you read the label?

It’s boring but it’s true, the washing guidelines are there for a reason. And while you might not want to do five different washes on different cycles, the most important checks to make are whether you can run it through the machine, or if it’s hand wash or dry clean only, and whether you can tumble dry it.

Many fabrics don’t respond well to high heat, which can cause fading, bobbling and shrinking, so only tumble-dry if it’s absolutely necessary, and if the label states you can do so.

Can you keep it cool?

For many years, if you wanted decent stain removal, you had to wash at a high temperature, which can damage your clothes and cause colours to fade over time.

But now, with advancements in both washing machines and detergents, it’s possible to get clean, fresh-smelling clothes while only washing at 30°C – or even 20°C if your machine allows it – which is good for your clothes, wallet and the environment.

The only exception is bed sheets, which should be washed at the hottest temperature that’s safe for the material, as this kills the most germs and takes care of dust mites that thrive in bedding. Polyester blends are best washed using warm water, while cotton can tolerate hot water.

Where should you hang it?

If you have an outside space and it’s not raining, you should hang your washing outside to dry. This is better than an expensive and potentially damaging tumble dry, or a slow indoor dry, which risks musty smells.

Be sure to hang white shirts, sheets and towels out on a bright, sunny day, as sunshine is a natural disinfectant and helps brighten whites. For colours, choose cloudier days or hang laundry in a shade-dappled part of the garden, so that direct sunlight doesn’t bleach out your bold hues.

With these tips, you should get a great wash, every time!

They are magic. So handy no fuss no mess

Ariel 3 in 1 Pods

These 3 in 1 pods are so small but they clean brilliantly and leave my washing smelling really fresh. I've had great results even on a 30 degree 30 minute cycle. Very easy to use too.

Great surprise

I got a sample of an Ariel pod when I bought a Dryer recently and was sceptic about trying out the pod as I have never used Ariel before. I am totally converted now, I have changed from powder to Ariel pods. They are great at removing stains & the clothes smells so good.
