3 problems caused by limescale – and how to beat them

Those unsightly white marks in your bathroom and kitchen are a sign that your home – and you – could be suffering from limescale damage.

Those unsightly white marks in your bathroom and kitchen are a sign that your home – and you – could be suffering from limescale damage.

Did you know every year an average of 13kg of limescale accumulates in your home?

It’s caused by the minerals found in hard water, which are left behind as chalky deposits once the water evaporates. Over time, this can build up, causing problems from a drizzly shower to a conked-out washing machine.

Here are the four main problems caused by limescale, and how you can beat them now – and prevent them in the future.

Problem 1: unsightly white streaks

If you have hard water, the mineral deposits left behind after the water has evaporated will leave white marks on your stainless steel sinks, taps and shower heads – plus it will leave your tiles and shower doors looking cloudy.

How to beat it: spray the affected area with Viakal Limescale Remover, wipe with a damp cloth and rinse with water. For tougher marks, leave Viakal to work for up to five minutes before wiping. Not only does Viakal get rid of the limescale, it also forms a barrier to protect your stainless steel and tiles, keeping it free from limescale for three times longer than other removers.

Problem 2: your home appliances suffer

From your washing machine and dishwasher to your steam iron and kettle, any appliance that uses water will suffer from the effects of limescale. This can mean a shorter lifespan for said appliances as they become clogged with limescale – plus you’ll get nasty flakes in your tea from your crusty kettle.

How to beat it: for your kettle, fill it with an equal part solution of white vinegar and water and let it sit for an hour. Boil then empty and rinse thoroughly. Similarly for your steam iron, pop the vinegar and water mix in the reservoir and let the iron steam for five-10 minutes.

For your washing machine, pop 500ml of white vinegar into the drum and run an empty wash on a high temperature. And for your dishwasher, pour two cups of white vinegar in the bottom of the machine and run on an empty cycle, stopping halfway through to let the vinegar sit for 20 minutes.

Do each one every few months to keep limescale at bay.

Problem 3: drizzly shower and taps

There’s little that can fuel a bad mood more than a drizzly shower in the morning, but if you let limescale take over, your power shower will soon become a sad sprinkler.

Your taps, too, can form a crust around the faucet, and this is just the tip of the iceberg, as it’s a sure sign your pipes are clogged with the crusty stuff, too, meaning water will struggle to pass through.

How to beat it: use Viakal Limescale Remover to clean the crusty stuff from your showerhead and taps, giving your morning routines a whole new lease of life.

Also throw a capful of drain cleaner down your plugholes to dissolve any deeper-set limescale.

Problem 4: dry and damaged skin and hair

The chalky deposits found in hard water can leave a scaly film on your hair when you wash it, which causes it to look dull and prevents your shampoo and conditioner from working at their best, leaving you with dry and tangly hair.

The minerals can also react with your soap to cause a scummy residue that can clog pores and leave your skin irritated.

How to beat it: invest in a water softener or filter that you can fix to your showerhead so it purifies the water as you wash. Hard water is perfectly safe to drink, but you can also buy a filter for your tap water as it can make it taste better.
