When it’s cold and miserable outside it is possible to snuggle up really warm indoors – bliss! But sometimes the foul weather becomes too much for us and the winter blues begin to take hold. You can then make yourself feel better with comfort food – an apple and vanilla pie is guaranteed to boost your mood.

Give those good feelings a helping hand. Our bodies need the nutrient tryptophan in order to be able to create the so-called happy hormone, serotonin. Food with high levels of tryptophan include parmesan (and other cheeses), cashew nuts, peanuts and fish. Chilli contains the substance capsaicin, which is thought to stimulate the metabolism and to lift the spirits.

Vanilla, chocolate, dates and bananas also stimulate the release of serotonin in the brain thanks to their levels of tryptophan. The smell of cinnamon is said to have a similar effect. Make sure you choose a real vanilla brand or powder as artificial vanilla doesn’t have the same effect. And with chocolate choose the darker varieties (with over 70 percent cocoa content), but in moderation, of course!
